Bachan Persaud Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bachan aka Buntin Persaud. May his soul find eternal peace. Om Namah Shivaya!

Bachan Persaud, known lovingly to family and friends as "Buntin" and "Papa," passed away on May 19, 2026, at the age of 79, in Staten Island, New York, after a courageous journey with a variety of neurological illnesses. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of hard work, honesty, generosity, kindness, and humility will continue to shine through the lives he touched.

Buntin was born on September 18, 1946, in Leguan, Guyana, where he grew up surrounded by a large family. He carried the warmth and spirit of his homeland with him throughout his life, eventually making his way to the United States, where he built a content and meaningful life on Staten Island. No matter how far he traveled from the country of his birth, he never lost the honest and generous nature that defined him from the very beginning.

Those who knew Buntin understood that his character spoke louder than any words ever could. He was a man of quiet humility, someone who gave freely of himself without ever expecting anything in return. His kindness was not the showy kind; it was steady, reliable, and deeply felt. Whether it was a helping hand, a warm meal, or simply his calm and reassuring presence, Buntin had a way of making people feel cared for.

Of all the joys in his life, none compared to his grandchildren. The births of Isabelle, Sarah, Mason, and Ava were his proudest moments, and he delighted in every milestone they reached. Being "Papa" was a role he cherished above all others, and his grandchildren brought a light to his eyes that everyone around him could see. He loved them all enormously.

With a somewhat abiding Hindu faith, he was shaped by the simplicity of his daily life not needing much and was always happy and content. One of his passions was singing bhajans, and through those devotional songs, he found peace, connection, and joy. His voice carried not just the words of those songs but the sincerity of a man who truly believed in their meaning.

Buntin is survived by his beloved wife, Jenno; his daughters, Daveka and Sharda; his son, Suresh; his cherished grandchildren, Isabelle, Sarah, Mason, and Ava; his brothers Ashok, Ram, Chris and Devo; and his sisters Chan, Shanta, and Baby. He was preceded in death by his sister Data and his brother Deo, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms.

Funeral services will be held at Martin Hughes Funeral Home. The family invites all who knew and loved Buntin to come together, share memories, and celebrate a life that was lived with mostly grace and goodness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donating to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Buntin’s memory. It is their hope that such contributions will help others facing the challenges that he met with such quiet courage.

May his soul find eternal peace, and may the love he so freely gave to everyone continue to ripple outward through all the lives he touched.

Om Namo Narayanaya!
