Brenda Theodora Hinds
Brenda Theodora Hinds passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, education, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her life was one dedicated to nurturing others—whether as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, professor, mentor, colleague, or friend. The countless lives she touched will forever bear the imprint of her gentle spirit, generous heart, and quiet wisdom.
Brenda was born on April 2, 1944, in Diego Martin, Trinidad, to Hilton and Margaret St. Rose. She was the fourth of eight children and the eldest daughter in a close-knit family. She was predeceased by or is lovingly remembered alongside her siblings Steve St. Rose, Allan St. Rose, Dave St. Rose, Roslyn Salandy, Wayne St. Rose, Germaine St. Rose, and Susan LeGendre. Throughout her life, Brenda fondly recalled her idyllic childhood in Trinidad, sharing vivid stories with her daughters of family, community, and simpler times. Those cherished memories reflected the deep love she held for her homeland and the family that shaped the remarkable woman she would become.
From an early age, Brenda demonstrated exceptional intelligence and leadership. She attended Mucurapo Girls' Elementary Catholic School, where she excelled academically and earned a Government Exhibition scholarship to attend Holy Name Convent High School. There, her academic achievements and exemplary character led to her being selected as Head Girl during her final year in the Upper Sixth Form, an honor that reflected the respect and admiration she earned from both faculty and fellow students.
Brenda's passion for science led her to the University of the West Indies, where she began her studies in biology. After two years, she emigrated to the United States to continue pursuing the educational opportunities that would define her distinguished career.
Her academic journey continued at the College of Staten Island, then known as Richmond College, where fate introduced her to the love of her life, Irwin Hinds. The two were married in June of 1972 and together built a home filled with love, laughter, and learning. Brenda later earned a Master of Science degree from Long Island University, furthering her lifelong commitment to education and scientific excellence.
Brenda enjoyed a distinguished career as a microbiologist before becoming a Professor of Laboratory Sciences at Wagner College. For twenty years, she inspired and educated generations of students, combining her expertise with patience, kindness, and genuine encouragement. She retired at the age of sixty-two, leaving behind not only an impressive professional legacy but also countless former students and colleagues who remember her fondly as an exceptional educator, mentor, and friend whose guidance extended well beyond the classroom.
To know Brenda was to experience kindness in its purest form. She possessed a compassionate heart, a nurturing spirit, and an extraordinary ability to make others feel welcomed, valued, and capable. She freely shared her wisdom, offered encouragement without hesitation, and quietly devoted herself to helping others succeed. Her generosity touched countless lives and created lasting friendships wherever she went.
While Brenda's professional accomplishments were significant, her greatest joy was always her family. She was a devoted wife to Irwin and a loving mother to her daughters, Nikki and Nyesha. More than a mother, she was their confidante, greatest supporter, trusted advisor, and best friend. Her unwavering love and guidance became the foundation upon which their lives were built.
Later in life, Brenda embraced her role as a grandmother with immeasurable joy. Her beloved grandsons, Joshua, age fifteen, and Nathaniel, age thirteen, became the light of her life. She delighted in every opportunity to spend time with them, showering them with unconditional love, encouragement, wisdom, and affection. She was everything a grandmother could possibly be—and so much more—creating treasured memories that will remain in their hearts forever.
Brenda also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including the Joseph, Salandy, and Achilles families, whose lives were enriched by her warmth, generosity, and enduring love.
Brenda Theodora Hinds will be remembered not only for her remarkable intellect and professional accomplishments but for the grace with which she lived, the kindness she extended to everyone she met, and the unconditional love she gave so freely to her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the generations she taught, the family she cherished, and the many lives she inspired through her quiet strength, unwavering compassion, and boundless generosity.
Though she will be deeply missed, her love, wisdom, and beautiful example will continue to guide all who were blessed to know her. Her memory will forever remain a blessing.
