Obituary

On Saturday, February 4, Daniel R. Miller, a loving family man and father of two, passed away at the age of 64.  Born on November 26, 1958, in Jersey City, N.J., to Richard D. Miller (deceased) and Carmela Miller, née Fasciano, Daniel attended Windsor Locks High School where he starred as Lazar Wolf in their production of Fiddler on the Roof.  He loved theatre and travel, often venturing off the well-worn path to seek a unique adventure with locals.

Daniel earned a bachelor’s degree at Manhattanville College where he met his wife, Seung Wha Kim at an Asian cultural party in 1979.  He went on to earn a Juris doctorate at the University of Bridgeport Law School, n.k.a. Quinnipiac University School of Law in 1983, and began his legal career at Novick Edelstein, P.C.  Daniel’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own legal practice in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1987.  Daniel was a skilled attorney that operated a successful practice for over thirty years with the help of his wife and partner.  Several of Daniel’s cases were published in the New York Law Journal for his excellent advocacy in landlord-tenant and foreclosure.  His pioneering legal theories on foreclosure defense were cited by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1990s.  His practice often focused on serving local small business owners, becoming well-known within the Korean community as a strong advocate.

Daniel was a devoted family man that cherished any opportunity to spend time with his children.  He served as their youth sports coach on numerous softball, baseball, and football teams, supporting three N.Y.S. championship victories for the girls' Mid-Island Little League All-Stars.  Daniel was best known for his humor, big heart, and generous spirit.  He loved the holidays and getting the entire family together.  His home was often the center of gatherings, and he kept his doors open to feed and house family and friends.

Daniel is survived by his wife Seung Wha Kim, daughter Anne Marie Miller, son-in-law John Minks, Jr., son Alexander J. Miller, mother Carmela Miller, brother Michael Miller, sister-in-law Julie Miller, and their three children, Matthew, Nicholas, and Megan, brother Richard J. Miller, sister-in-law Ziyuan Zhou, and their two children, Adam, and Andrea.  A wake will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 2 P.M. – 4 P.M.; 7 P.M. – 9 P.M. at Martin Hughes Funeral Home, 530 Narrows Road South, Staten Island.  A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at 11 A.M. at the same location.
