Domenico Caragiulo, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born on May 24, 1936, in Mola di Bari, Italy, Domenico immigrated to the United States in 1956 with his family aboard the Andrea Doria, beginning a new chapter in the land of opportunity.
After settling in New York, Domenico built a respected career as a longshoreman on the Brooklyn waterfront. Known for his creativity, skill, and “hands of gold,” he managed the gear room, where he designed specialized slings and rigging to safely move cargo. Among his proudest accomplishments was overseeing the removal of 300 new Kawasaki subway cars for the MTA without a single scratch.
Domenico was also a gifted craftsman outside of work. He spent many years creating detailed scale model ships by hand, building every piece with patience and precision. One of his most cherished creations was a model of the Andrea Doria, the very ship that carried him to America.
Domenico valued the friendships and connections he made throughout his life. He was a proud member of the Staten Island Mola Club and the Caduti Superga Mola Club in Brooklyn, where he enjoyed spending time with friends, celebrating his Italian heritage.
Above all, Domenico treasured his family. He was the devoted husband of Catherine who passed in 2014. He was a loving father to Vito, Dominic (Christine) and Toni Ann (Jeff), and his cherished sister Maria Caputo. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John. He was a proud grandfather to Cory, Daniel, Kaitlyn, Dominic, Jessica, and Jeffrey, and his love and wisdom will continue to live on through them. Domenico was preceded in death by his parents, Vitangelo and Antonia Caragiulo, and his brothers Antonio and Angelo Caragiulo.
His life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the pursuit of the American dream. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on through the family he cherished, the friendships he nurtured, and the memories he leaves behind.
