Frank “Chicky” Peteroy, 81, a proud retiree of the New York City Department of Sanitation and lifelong Staten Islander, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, at Carmel Richmond Nursing Home—just one day shy of his 82nd birthday.
Born and raised in New Brighton, Mr. Peteroy also resided in West Brighton and Sunnyside before making his home in Westerleigh in the 1980s. For the past decade, he had been a resident of Carmel Richmond, where he was known for his feistiness and quick wit.
Mr. Peteroy dedicated 19 years of service to the New York City Department of Sanitation before retiring in 1987 at the age of 44. He took great pride in his work and in being part of a department known for its hard-working camaraderie and community spirit.
A devoted sports fan, Mr. Peteroy could often be found cheering on his favorite teams or engaged in a friendly game of poker—a pastime he truly loved. Above all, he cherished the love and loyalty of his family and friends. Their phone calls, visits, and acts of kindness brought him great comfort and joy throughout his later years. He remained deeply grateful for the affection that surrounded him and often spoke of how blessed he felt to have such enduring support.
He is survived by his son, Michael Peteroy; his devoted daughter and son-in-law, AnneMarie and Joseph Russo; and his adoring grandchildren, Michael and Elizabeth Russo. He is also survived by his brothers, William and Louis Peteroy, and his sister, Marianne Melfi and other extended family members including Donna Ghilino.
Mr. Peteroy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara, who passed in 2000, as well as by his brothers Lawrence and Ronald.
