It is with heavy hearts that the family of Evangelist Mamie Esther Daniels announces that
she entered eternal rest on December 9, 2022 peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Evangelist Daniels will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Lisa Williams of
Myrtle Beach, SC; Gabrielle Jordan of Miami, Fl and Marsha Byrd (George) of Davenport, Fl;
by her sisters Charlotte Parham (Robert) and Jennie Adams; by her brother Steven Blair
(Dorothy); by her brother-in-law Richard Saye; by her grandchildren Tristan Reddick (Zorate),
Brian Williams, George Byrd Jr., Ian Jordan, Robert Byrd (Micharon) and her 7 great-
grandchildren Ruby, Caleb, Roman, Hannah, Jaylen, Madeleine and Ava. She will also be
remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as her church families. Mamie
was preceded in death by her husband Edgar (Skee) J Daniels; her parents Ruby and George
Blair Sr; her granddaughter Alicia Byrd; her aunt Mary Helen Blair; and her brothers Charles E
Blair, Robert Blair, Clarence Blair and George Blair Jr.
Mamie was born on September 18, 1931 in Shorterville, Alabama, the first child of Ruby
and George Blair, Sr. At the age of 5 she along with her family moved to the Sandy Ground
neighborhood of Staten Island, NY before moving to Stapleton. She graduated from Curtis High
School at 15 years old with highest honors. Mamie also graduated from Boulder Academy
Seminary in New Jersey where she achieved the honor of becoming an Evangelist.
For more than 40 years she dedicated her life to being a retail store manager loyally
working for Highway Textiles Corporation, first at Majors Department Store, then at Curtains &
Home where she held the leadership role of opening up the first retail store on Staten Island.
Mamie’s family began worshipping at Stapleton UAME Church when she was 8 years
old. She became devoted to serving the Lord at an early age. Mamie served on various boards
throughout her ministry at Stapleton Church. In 1987, she started a soup kitchen at the Church
on a minimalist budget with only a few $20 donations. Her mother, Ruby Blair, lovingly served
as the first cook.
That effort grew into the Community Outreach Ministry that serves meals and provides a
food pantry for the needy in the community to this day. Her foresight and ingenuity often
became the blueprint for other churches and non-profits to start outreach programs to reach those
that are often forgotten in our communities. She ran the soup kitchen and food pantry for 30
years, only retiring when she left New York to live with her youngest daughter and son-in-law in
Florida. Although Mamie relocated to Florida, she passionately continued to be a vital part of
that effort.
After relocating to Florida in 2012, Mamie then joined St. James AME Zion Church in
Kissimmee, FL. Within a short time, she spearheaded an Outreach ministry in Kissimmee that
provided food, clothing, and toys to children and their families’ living in hotels during the
holidays. Additionally, she organized and held various programs at the Church which was her
way of continuing to give back to the community and encourage members of the importance of
doing God’s work.
Throughout her life, Evangelist Daniels served in many distinguished positions through
ministry and leadership. To name a few, she served as the Superintendent of Sunday School,
Secretary of the UAME Conference, Treasurer, Missionary Board, Trustee, and Steward Board.
She held these distinguished honors at both the local and conference level. In 2002, Mamie was
chosen to be a Staten Island Advance Woman of Achievement in which she felt honored to have
received this award.
Mamie’s love for The Lord championed her ability to dedicate her life’s work of helping
others in need. She touched so many people’s lives in ways we cannot imagine. She was an
exhorter, an encourager, a teacher, a leader; She was most faithful, patient, and kind. She was a
wonderful mother who was always there when her children needed her. She also had many
friends and was a well-loved member of the community. She diligently worked for the ministry
of Christ in All Ways.
A visitation will be held at Martin Hughes Funeral Home on Sunday, December 18, 2022 from
2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service in celebration of Mamie’s life and legacy
will be held at Martin Hughes Funeral Home, 530 Narrows Rd S, Staten Island, NY, 10304 on
Monday, December 19, 2022 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Silver Mount Cemetery at
1:00pm.
The family will hold a light reception for the Family members of Mamie Daniels, quietly
reflecting her life of love and faithfulness.
