It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Hughes, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. On August 4, 2023, at the age of 87, Mary peacefully departed this world in her sleep at Carmel Richmond Nursing Home in Staten Island, NY. Her presence will be dearly missed, but her legacy of love and joy will forever live on in our hearts.
Mary was a remarkable woman whose infectious smile brightened the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Despite facing various challenges, she possessed an unwavering courage that allowed her to embrace life to the fullest. Her warm and kind-hearted nature made her an angel in the lives of her family and friends, and she showered them with an abundance of love and affection.
Throughout her life, Mary's devotion to her three children, Gerald E. Hughes, Doreen A. Hughes, and her daughter-in-law Maria Tanzi-Hughes, was immeasurable. Her love for them knew no bounds, and she was always their pillar of strength and support.
Mary leaves behind a cherished legacy within her family circle. She is survived by her loving sisters, Frances, Josephine, and Dorothy, who shared a special bond that stood the test of time. The loss of Mary will also be felt by her adoring grandchildren: Gerald, Sean, Patrick, Kristen, Danny, Christopher, Michael, and Amanda. Her influence extended further, touching the lives of her five great-grandchildren: Logan, Maximus, Charlotte, Evelyn, Mercy Grace, and John James, all of whom were a source of immense joy in her life. Additionally, she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who were grateful recipients of her love and wisdom.
Though she was predeceased by her beloved daughter Karen Ann Hughes, the memory of their deep and loving bond will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew them. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Thomas Farley, and her dear sisters Catherine, Anna, and Eleanor, with whom she shared a lifetime of cherished memories.
In honor of Mary's memory, the Hughes family welcomes donations of flowers or encourages the planting of trees as a beautiful way to pay tribute to her life and her love for nature. She had a special connection to the environment and would have cherished the idea of leaving a lasting impact on the Earth she cherished so dearly.
To all those who have visited, sent condolences, and supported the Hughes family during this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Mary's departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her spirit and love will continue to inspire and comfort us. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her presence will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved her.
