Robert James Ballard, Sr., age 93, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born and raised in Staten Island. He attended Augustinian Academy and upon graduating he joined the U.S. Navy. He served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He later served in the NYC Fire Department, retiring after 30 years of service.
Bob was an active member of many organizations, FDNY Retirees Association; The Emerald Society; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7172; The Holy Name Society FDNY, and The U.S. L.S.T. Association.
He enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known for his rice pudding and pumpkin cake. Bob was a devoted, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved spending time with his family, especially during the Holidays. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.
Bob was pre-deceased by his son Robert Jr. and by Robert Jr.’s first wife Linda. Surviving is his wife Jeanne (nee Buttermark); son Kevin (Betty); daughter Jennine Raskin (Robert); daughter-in-law Doreen; Siblings; Catherine, Edward and Shirley; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be a visitation at the Martin Hughes Funeral Home on Sunday, December 19th, from 3-7pm. On Monday the 20th, there will be a mass of Christian burial at St. Sylvester’s RC Church at 11:30am, with a committal immediately following at Moravian Cemetery.
