Walter James Finnigan was born in New York, NY to the late Walter Joseph Finnigan and Mary Fisher Finnigan. He spent his formative years living in Bronx, NY. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Rice High School before later moving to Staten Island, NY where he met the love of his life, Paula Ferrara, to whom he was married for forty eight years. Walter continued his education at Staten Island Community College.
Walter built a long and dedicated career in shipping and freight logistics management, retiring from Independence Maritime in 2014.
A devoted and loving father, Walter cherished time with his children. He loved taking pictures of his family, capturing everyday moments and milestones alike. When his children were young, he enjoyed taking them to the beach, the arcade, and on bike rides—simple times that became cherished memories. Walter was also an avid music lover and collector, amassing an impressive record collection over the years. He spent many happy hours expanding his coin collection as well. In later years, when travel became difficult, he took great joy in sending thoughtful gifts to his grandchildren, ensuring they always felt his love from afar.
Walter is survived by his wife, Paula Ferrera Finnigan; his children, Sean Finnigan and Kristin Finnigan; his grandchildren, David Valladares, Soleil Finnigan, and Stone Finnigan; and his sister, Barbara Dardzinski.
