Zoila Ramos came to the USA in February 1974 in pursue of a better life just like
everyone else that comes to this country. She was proud of her native Colombian roots,
specifically Cartagena where she was born. When asked where she was from, she used to say
“Soy Cartagenera morena”. During her first few years in the USA, she lived in the Bronx with
her parents and she worked as a factory worker in the Morningside Heights area in Manhattan.
In 1976 she married the love of her life Raymond and had 3 children. A few years later
she moved to the Mariners Harbor area of Staten Island and started working for the Stella Orton
Home Care Agency as a home attendant. She loved her job as she was able to care for the
elderly who couldn’t fend for themselves. Being a devoted catholic, she joined the Sacred Heart
of Jesus at her church where she was an active participant.
Her hobbies were cooking, dancing, traveling whenever possible and spending time with
her granddaughters as well as enjoying their sports activities which she always wanted to be
included and being present for.
